County offers free ID cards for kids

A free KidPix photo ID program is scheduled for Oct. 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Freeport Library Annual Fall Festival at 144 West Merrick Rd.

The event sponsored by Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano will provide participating families with a wallet-sized ID card that includes the child’s name, physical description, contact information and photograph. The child’s fingerprint is also included on the back of the card. If a child is missing, parents can give the card to law enforcement officials.

Rally aims to raise awareness of needs

An East Rockaway civic organization plans to hold a rally on Saturday, Aug. 31, to draw attention to the needs of its community, where many residents remain out of their homes because of superstorm Sandy.

The rally has been scheduled to take place from noon to 2 p.m. at Kevin E. McNulty Park, south of the East Rockaway train station on Ocean Avenue.

The group organizing the rally, the 11518 Inc., is a civic association made up of East Rockaway and Bay Park residents that formed after Sandy. The group is named after the East Rockaway ZIP code.

“Our goal for this rally is simply raise awareness that residents in our community still need help and are still waiting for it,” group member Dan Caracciolo said in a statement. “Many neighbors are still not back in their homes — our schools suffered tremendous damage — and we listen to the hum of the Bay Park generators every single day.”

The rally is primarily to show support for hundreds of East Rockaway and Bay Park residents who are “still living with family, friends and in hotels” 10 months after the storm, the group said in a statement. — PATRICK WHITTLE

Advocates of disabled offers Web seminar

The National Business & Disability Council at The Viscardi Center, an Albertson organization working to advance disability issues, will host a Web seminar on Tuesday, Sept. 3, to help federal contractors hire more qualified workers with disabilities.

The seminar comes after the U.S. Department of Labor announced updated rules this week, including a “hiring goal for federal contractors and subcontractors that 7 percent of each job group in their workforce be qualified individuals with disabilities.”

The council, whose members include federal contractors, will offer its members the “7% Boot Camp Webinar” for free. For nonmembers, the cost is $99. The online seminar takes place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Officials from The Viscardi Center said the webinar will detail the rule changes; offer resume databases that companies’ can scour to recruit qualified individuals with disabilities; and host a question and answer forum.
