Joe Fernandez threw a six-inning no-hitter, with all 18 outs coming on strikeouts, as Upper Room (1-0) defeated Waldorf, 15-0, yesterday in IPPSAL. The 18 strikeouts is a career high for the senior and broke the school record for a game, according to coach Tony Passalacqua. Fernandez lost his perfect game by hitting a batter with one out in the sixth inning. He also went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs.

 

St. Dominic 2, St. Mary's 1: Derek Hirsch's two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning provided the winning margin in a CHSAA game. Vinny Orlando, who walked with one out, also scored on the play. Robert Galligan pitched five innings, allowing one earned run, three hits and a walk for St. Dominic (2-0). St. Mary's is 0-2.

Half Hollow Hills East 5, West Islip 2: Lee Giglio broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to give Half Hollow Hills East (1-1) the lead for good in League III. Vinny Noble went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, and Tom D'Allessandro went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. West Islip is 1-1.

Hauppauge 6, Kings Park 4: Angelo Biondo (3-for-4) led off the top of the eighth with a double, moved to third on Chris Dutton's groundout and scored on a passed ball to give Hauppauge (2-0) a 4-3 lead in League V. Bobby Vitulano (3-for-3, three runs) later singled to score John Coby, who walked and stole second. In the bottom of the seventh, David Budzitowski made a lunging catch against the leftfield fence to preserve a 3-3 tie for Hauppauge. Kings Park is 0-2.

Smithtown East 2, Commack 0: Tim Kopiske and Joe Kubiscko hit back-to-back, two-out doubles in the bottom of the sixth to give Smithtown East (2-0) a 1-0 lead in non-league. Kubiscko, who went 3-for-3, scored an insurance run on an error. Kopiske earned the save with a scoreless seventh. Commack is 0-1.

SOFTBALL

Hauppauge 12, Comsewogue 0: Junior Kayla Conover pitched a five-inning perfect game with 11 strikeouts for Hauppauge (3-0) in League V. Sandy Hawthorne went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs. Comsewogue is 0-3.

Kings Park 13, Harborfields 0: Lindsay Taylor pitched a five-inning perfect game with 12 strikeouts for Kings Park (3-0). Reina Torlincasi went 2-for-2 with a solo home run. Harborfields is 0-4.

Farmingdale 3, Massapequa 2: Kerry Ossenford had a two-run single to give Farmingdale (1-1) a 2-0 lead in the first inning in Conference AA-I. Isabella Corrao had 11 strikeouts in a complete-game victory for the Dalers.
