Valley Stream 30 School Voters Guide 2010
VOTING
6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Clear Stream Avenue, Forest Road and Shaw Avenue elementary schools.
THE BUDGET
The district is proposing a budget of $31,395,751 for the 2010-11 school year, an increase of 2.70 percent over the current budget of $30,571,820. The tax levy would rise to $24,078,751, an increase of 1.36 percent over the current figure of $23,754,820.
The average homeowner with a house assessed at $901 would pay $2,415 in school taxes, 1.47 percent above the current figure of $2,380.
The proposed budget also includes estimated increases in teacher salaries subject to negotiation later this year. There are no proposed reductions in district staff, programs or services.
In addition to the budget, there is a referendum on the ballot to approve the use of up to $1.6 million in the capital reserve fund to complete several projects during the summer of 2011, including districtwide window replacement and ceiling and lighting replacement at Shaw Avenue School.

THE CANDIDATES
Jim Lavery is running unopposed for the seat of Maria Fletcher, who is not seeking re-election. The term is five years.
