Valley Stream FEMA meeting on flood map

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will meet Jan. 2 to unveil proposed changes in its flood map for Valley Stream and surrounding communities.
The session will run from 7 to 9 p.m. in the courtroom at Village Hall at 123 S. Central Ave.
FEMA recently completed a coastal analysis of New York City to revise its Flood Insurance Rate Maps for the city. As part of the analysis it updated flood data for Jamaica Bay, the body of water that causes flooding in the Valley Stream area.
Under legislation sponsored by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), FEMA was obligated to use the new Jamaica Bay data to update the Nassau map for areas affected by Jamaica Bay.
FEMA says the changes will lower the flood baseline elevation about one foot to about 10.4 feet and expects to remove about 4,500 property owners in Valley Stream, Cedarhurst, Lynbrook and some surrounding areas from the flood zone next summer. It will add about 60 properties to the flood zone but few structures.
