Verbitsky's walkoff homer gives Island Trees win over Garden City
Bryan Verbitsky, who went 3-for-3 with two home runs, hit a walk-off three-run homer to give Island Trees a 12-10 win over Garden City in Nassau Conference A-I baseball Thursday. The win was coach Joe D'Auria's 100th for Island Trees, which is 11-8.
Glen Cove 6, Bethpage 5: Michael Iannetta singled in Matteo Gaudio in the seventh to win it for Glen Cove (7-11) in A-I. Gaudio's two-run double had tied the score at 5 for Glen Cove, which clinched the seventh seed for the Nassau 'A' playoffs. Richard Maccarone struck out nine in the win and went 2-for-3 with two doubles.
Floral Park 9, Lynbrook 8: Nick Calanda hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to give Floral Park (10-8) an 8-7 lead in A-II. Calanda's double in the sixth scored Mike Tandredi to make it 9-7. Brendan Dorfer had a two-run homer in the fourth for Floral Park.
North Shore 3, Valley Stream North 1: Lou Mastellone doubled in Colin Hennenberger and John Scuderi followed with a two-run homer in the third inning to give North Shore a 3-0 lead. Cody Johnson allowed two hits, two walks and struck out five in six innings for North Shore (11-7).
Seaford 3, Jericho 2: Eddie Schaller scored on an error to give Seaford (12-6) a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first. Seaford clinched at least a share of the conference title. Bobby Ryan threw a six-hitter and Mike Gallo went 2-for-2 with an RBI, two stolen bases and a run.
Oyster Bay 11, Wheatley 0: Joe Siringo allowed three hits and struck out six for Oyster Bay, which finished the regular season 18-1 in Conference BC and enters the Nassau Class B playoffs as the No. 1 seed. Siringo had four hits with three RBIs and Dan Roland had three hits, including a home run, with two RBIs.
West Babylon 8, Smithtown West 0: Justin Schwartz pitched a one-hitter with four strikeouts and three walks and West Babylon (9-6) scored six runs in the first inning in League IV. Sam Miraglio had an RBI double and Nick Messina, who was 4-for-4, had a two-run double in the first. Rich Lyon was 3-for-3 for West Babylon.
Riverhead 5, Deer Park 4: Mike Napoli's RBI single in the third inning scored Mike Luce from second to give Riverhead (7-7) a 5-3 lead. Greg Zilnicki struck out four and allowed four runs, and went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Islip 6, Harborfields 0: Jacob Seymour hit a three-run double in the top of the fourth to give Islip (13-1) a 3-0 lead and Wil Vega hit a two-run double in the fifth for Islip in League V. Edvardas Matusevicius went six innings and allowed five hits, walked none and struck out 11.
Mercy 5, Pierson/Bridgehampton 3: Chris Sachak hit an RBI single to give Mercy (7-4) a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth in League VIII. Iain Traynor hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score at 3.
St. John the Baptist 4, Chaminade 0: Kevin Courtney had eight strikeouts, no walks and allowed six hits for St. John the Baptist (10-6) in Game 1 of a CHSAA doubleheader. Courtney has thrown 25 consecutive shutout innings spanning four games.
In Game 2, Vinny Iacono went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and Jim Manton and Kevin McLaughlin added three hits each for SJB in a 10-3 win.St. Mary's 4, Holy Trinity 3: Mike Nardozzi singled in Vinny Maietta in the third inning to give St. Mary's (2-12) a 4-3 lead. Alex Falconi went 2-for-2 with a homer and two RBIs and Jack Joyce allowed three hits and struck out six in six innings for the win. Joe Tracy earned the save.
