Veterans home treated father with dignity
Recently I had the unpleasant task of finding a nursing facility for my father. Like so many other children facing this onerous job, I wanted the best for him. He was a wonderful father to my brother and me.
After I visited a few facilities, and found them extremely depressing, making my situation even more difficult, someone suggested the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook. I toured the facility, and found it to have a pleasant atmosphere. Nevertheless, I was skeptical. Being a World War II veteran, my father was accepted, and after a couple of weeks, my skepticism disappeared.
I have no words to describe the care and compassion with which he was treated. It was comforting to know that a physician was always on call. Not so with the private nursing homes I'm familiar with. The aides and nursing staff were exceptional.
My father passed away on Nov. 4 after a five-month stay. I was called the night before. Upon arriving, I found him comfortable, hair combed, clean-shaven, with a Bible, crucifix, flowers with flag, and what they call a comfort radio softly playing music at his bedside. He seemed very peaceful. I was extremely touched and grateful.
