Veterans to renew vows on Valentine’s Day
This Valentine’s Day, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray will hold wedding renewals for veterans married before, during or shortly after World War II, the Vietnam War, the Korean conflict, the Gulf War, and the Afghanistan and Iraq campaigns.
Murray will tell romantic stories of how veterans fell in love just before, during or after their tours of duty. The event on Feb. 14 will begin at 11 a.m. at the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport, on 1230 New Hwy., in East Farmingdale.
A Tuskegee Airman is expected to renew vows, as well as a couple that served together in Iraq, town officials said.
“Our veterans have proved, time and time again, the commitment and love they have for our great nation,” Murray said in a statement. “It is therefore fitting that this Valentine’s Day, we focus on the love and commitment our veterans have for their spouses.”
At the ceremony, then-and-now photographs will surround couples, who will then celebrate with complimentary food and champagne, town officials said.
For more information or to participate in the ceremony, contact the town’s Department of Communications and Public Affairs at 516-812-3278, or send a letter to Town of Hempstead Communications, One Washington St., Hempstead, NY 11550.
