Video stream of recovering harbor seal set up in Riverhead

The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation has set up a live video stream of a rescued baby harbor seal that it hopes will attract people to its website and make a donation toward its recovery and care.

Donations of $30, $40, or $100 can potentially get you invited to the seal’s release, set for March. For $6,500, you can name it. 

The nearly 3-foot-long seal was diagnosed with a respiratory infection, malnourishment and dehydration when it washed up off Dune Road in Westhampton Beach on Jan. 14, said Rob DiGiovanni, executive director of the Riverhead Foundation.

Its health has since improved, and a physical is set to be conducted sometime Monday.

DiGiovanni said the foundation hopes to raise $14,000 -- $10,000 for seal’s rehabilitation and another $4,000 to mark the seal with a tag that allows it to monitor its movements after its release.

Now the barely three-foot seal is eating about 8 pounds of fish a day.

The live video stream follows the seal in its hospital tank 24 hours a day.
