The Vikings waived quarterback Donovan McNabb yesterday, giving him the opportunity to sign elsewhere for the stretch run after a parting that coach Leslie Frazier described as mutual.

The 13-year veteran, who was unavailable for comment, was 1-5 as a starter with only four touchdown passes. He was benched in favor of rookie Christian Ponder in the fourth quarter Oct. 16 and hadn't played since.

Frazier said McNabb helped Ponder and Joe Webb in their learning process. "He's a class guy," Frazier said.

Police in Decatur, Ala., said Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain was arrested on charges of assault in the third degree, menacing, reckless endangerment and discharging a firearm inside the city limits after a fight Wednesday night. He reportedly was in town to attend his grandfather's funeral.

A police statement said McClain allegedly fired a gun beside a man's head. It said the man begged McClain not to shoot him, and that no one was shot in the altercation.
