Contested elections will be held Tuesday in 15 villages around Long Island, 13 of them in <a href="/topics/Hempstead%2C_NY">Hempstead</a> and <a href="/topics/North_Hempstead%2C_NY">North Hempstead</a> towns. In other villages with elections Tuesday, candidates are running without opposition on the ballot. The majority of the remaining villages will hold their elections in June.

Call it the village election that candidates forgot. 
Seats for two trustees and the mayor are up for grabs in the 109-acre Village of Baxter Estates, but the ballot has no names. 
It's not that people aren't interested in the two-year terms. They just didn't file the paperwork on time, village clerk Yvonne Whitcomb said. 
So voters in this community of about 1,000 people along Manhasset Bay face a blank ballot. 
"It will be a write-in vote election," Whitcomb said. 
The interested candidates include current Mayor Frederick E. Nicholson and incumbent Trustee Charles Comer, who want to keep their positions. 
James Neville -- the mayor from 2001 to 2005 who was ousted in an uncontested race by a surprise write-in candidate -- is looking to fill an open trustee seat. 
Nicholson said time simply got away from him. 
He started a new job Feb. 1. The candidacy petition, with 50 signatures, was due Feb. 8. He also wasn't sure he'd have time to devote to running the village and its $800,000 budget. 
"Between me waffling and the clock not stopping, we just didn't get to it," said Nicholson, who became mayor in 2007 on a write-in campaign. 
He said he wants to keep the job in order to complete the purchase and renovation of the Bird House, a surplus <a href="/topics/Port_Washington%2C_NY">Port Washington</a> Sewer District property. 
"It will be interesting to see if there will be other people running," he said. 
For potential candidates and voters, there are write-in rules: They must be residents of the village and they must be real. Mickey Mouse cannot be elected mayor. And if a resident is elected but does not want the job, he or she can decline the position, Whitcomb said. 
After the polls close Tuesday, she will count the paper ballots and reveal the majority vote-getters as winners.

Only write-ins running in Baxter Estates

A widely anticipated battle for village mayor in Greenport - between incumbent David Nyce and former Southold Town Supervisor Joshua Horton - never happened, because Horton dropped out. 
That has left a contested race between three candidates for two four-year seats on the village board, with Nyce unopposed. 
At a candidates' debate earlier this month, incumbent George Hubbard Jr., 51, said he wants to continue serving with Nyce, finishing renovations of Greenport's utilities and promoting Greenport as a place where businesses can thrive and tourists can visit even earlier in the spring and stay throughout the fall. Hubbard said he has worked in the past four years to develop a Little League ballfield and has worked on community beautification projects. 
First-time candidate David <a href="/topics/David_Murray">Murray</a>, 42, chairman of the village's historic preservation commission, largely agreed but politely declined to answer some questions from the audience, saying he has only lived in the village for 10 years and needs to do his homework before he can address every issue. 
Murray did say he wants to continue the spirit of cooperation and volunteerism that has always been behind the village's growth, and is interested in expanding the village's historic district. 
William Swiskey, 63, who ran the village utilities before retiring and is a former village board member again seeking election, was blunt. He said things in Greenport are terrible. 
In his view, the village is facing a fiscal crisis, won't have enough money in two years to pay off its bonded debt, and has too many supervisors and not enough workers on the payroll. 
Swiskey contended that, in two years, the village would be facing a 40 percent tax increase, something the other candidates denied. "This village is approaching a critical time, no matter what you hear," Swiskey said. 
When asked about his reputation for being outspoken, Swiskey said: "I speak truth to power." 
The candidates agreed that the village needs to be more active in dealing with code enforcement problems, and that it needs more affordable housing. And they said Southold Town should do more to help Greenport with some of its problems, because the village does not have the resources to do everything itself.

Mayor's record 
Nyce said that in his four years in office, the village's $13.5-million debt - much of it for the development of the waterfront Mitchell Park - had been cut in half. He also said about half the $6.5 million renovation of the municipal wastewater treatment plant was completed, and that the village is about to award a $1.5-million contract to begin the $5-million renovation of its power plant.

Trustee hopefuls share plans for Greenport

Below are elections being held on Tuesday around the Town of North Hempstead:

A call for fresh ideas has led to a clash of old versus new in the Village of East Hills contest for mayor and two trustee seats.
Three candidates representing the East Hills Advocacy Group have taken aim at the incumbents, calling for new ideas, ethical accountability and the reduction of costs and taxes.
The incumbents said the trio is spreading misinformation and creating a heated atmosphere and have no political experience to run a village.
The advocacy group's mayoral hopeful, Matthew J. Weiss, and trustee candidates Jonathan Penn and Gregg Resnick are challenging the 16-year mayor, Michael Koblenz, and incumbent trustees Gary Leventhal and Peter Zuckerman for the four-year seats.
"I'm just a concerned and engaged resident who got annoyed and more annoyed," said Weiss, who has lived in the village for 12 years.
Weiss, Resnick and Penn said they want to make village decisions more open to the public, cut the salaries of elected officials and create a friendlier atmosphere when dealing with the Building Department.
The incumbents say the village is running well. The $11.4-million budget is balanced and taxes are paying down a voter-approved bond that was used to build the Park at East Hills.
"There are no issues," said Koblenz, a resident for 24 years. "We're taking care of ourselves. We're running a surplus."
The challengers pledge to cut the trustee and mayoral salaries by 50 percent. Documents provided by Village Attorney William Burton show that the mayor's salary this year is $60,060, while trustees are paid $21,524 a year. 
Leventhal, a financial adviser at <a href="/topics/Merrill_Lynch">Merrill Lynch</a> and volunteer firefighter who has lived in East Hills for 32 years, said the councilors and mayor took a salary increase beginning in 2006 because of increased workload due to the park. The village does not have an administrator, which means the board does much of that work, he said. 
Both Zuckerman and Leventhal said maintaining services without increasing costs has been and is a focus for the board. Bringing sanitation services in house was one way the board has cut costs. "We know what we're doing," Leventhal said.
Zuckerman, 42, an attorney and trustee for eight years, also wants to make sure the park remains for the pleasure of the residents, not be treated as a means to make money off villagers.
Penn, 35, a three-year resident, is vice president of sales at the online advertising firm Magnetic. He wants to establish programs for preferred vendors to give discounts to residents for oil, insurance, utilities and other services.
"We just want to give a new, fresh and innovative look," Penn said. 
Resnick, 44, owner of the interior alteration firm Allied Arborcraft Corp. and a six-year resident, said the park needs to be more efficient. "It's costing a lot of money and we have to figure out how to make it more cost-efficient," Resnick said.
Voting will take place from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Village Hall, 209 Harbor Hill Rd.

Mineola's board of trustees will see some shuffling as one incumbent and two other candidates, including the current mayor, vie for two open two-year seats and a current trustee runs for mayor.
<a href="/topics/Lawrence%2C_NY">Lawrence</a> Werther, 58, was appointed village mayor when then-Mayor Jack Martins won a State Senate seat in November. Werther is now running for trustee while current trustee Scott Strauss is seeking the mayoral seat.
Also looking for a seat on the board are <a href="/topics/Nassau_County%2C_NY">Nassau</a> Downs OTB data communications manager George Durham and Christopher <a href="/topics/Wales">Wales</a>, a customer service supervisor at Capri Album.
Werther, a trustee for eight years, said he will focus on downtown revitalization, filling storefronts and attracting shoppers.
"If we can generate more revenue off properties like that, we can keep the taxes off the residential [tax rolls]," said Werther, a financial adviser who moved to Mineola in 1980.
He said he should be a logical choice, given his record. During his tenure, the board reduced fees for disposing municipal waste, decreased the budget deficit and made government more accessible, he said.
Durham, 47, served on the community planning committee that formed the master plan, and from 1999 to 2003 was chairman of the downtown revitalization subcommittee, which installed pavers, lights, benches and planting downtown.
The lifelong Mineola resident lost a trustee race in 2006. He said he wants to ensure senior affordable housing is completed as part of the Winston condominium project on Old Country Road. Reducing debt also is a goal.
"We shouldn't be living above what we can afford," he said. "We can't saddle our children with debt."
Wales, a village resident since 1988, pledged to focus on repairing roads, reducing energy usage through alternative power and expanding youth-focused village activities. He also wants to promote the Mineola Auxiliary Police to help increase its ranks and boost civic participation.
He said the time is right for new trustees. "I would like to give back to my village," said Wales, 49. "It gave me a good place to live for 20 years."
Voting will take place from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Mineola Community Center at Village Hall, 155 Washington Ave.

In Williston Park, incumbent Barbara Alagna and challenger James Bumstead are vying for an open one-year board of trustees seat.
Alagna was appointed trustee in April 2010 when Beth Swendsen-Dowd left the board to become a village justice. The election is to fill out the term.
Alagna, a resident since 1987, ran a catering business with her husband for 20 years. After closing the business, she went back to secretarial work and was Williston Park's village secretary from 2000 to 2006.
The trustee wants to focus on keeping costs down while maintaining services. "Everyone is dealing with less money, and everything is costing more money," Alagna said. "We don't want to say in a blasé way, 'Let's just increase taxes.' "
Bumstead, 77, said one reason he chose to run was that he doesn't like elections with unopposed candidates.
A resident since 1991, Bumstead worked as vice president and manager at a Fleet Bank branch in Mineola for 20 years. He was president of the Mineola Chamber of Commerce for three years in the late 1980s, and he said his managerial and financial background would serve him well on the Williston Park board.
Bumstead said he would focus on quality-of-life issues, such as repairing potholes and cracked sidewalks.
"I hope my impact is going to be my wisdom I'm going to impart if I'm elected," he said.
Voting will take place from noon to 9 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 730 Willis Ave.

The three candidates in the East Williston trustee election are all first-time candidates for one open seat, but share deep ties to the community.
Caroline DeBenedittis, 46, a homemaker running on the Involved Party line, has lived in East Williston for 13 years and is chairwoman of the village's recreation committee, a member of the PTO at the Wheatley School and founder of the school's wrestling booster club.
She said she's familiar with the village's top quality-of-life issue: teenagers hanging out on the village green. DeBenedittis, who lives nearby, said she has witnessed the ruckus that the groups of teens can cause and tried to divert their attention to youth activities hosted by the recreation committee.
"I presented the teens with different activities that will keep them out of trouble," she said.
For Robert Shannon, 37, who is on the Community Party line, the village needs to find a compromise with the teens.
"We want to make sure they feel safe and independent, but right now a lot of people feel it's a concern," said Shannon, who has lived in the village for four years, is the owner of a roofing company, president of the local chamber of commerce and a member of the village planning board. But the village's finances are a top priority, he said.
Bonnie Parente, 41, who has lived in the village for almost eight years, is the human resources director for the <a href="/topics/New_York_Racing_Association">New York Racing Association</a>, as well as a member of the village board of zoning and appeals.
"I think there are a lot of issues out there where it's going to be difficult to make everyone happy, but every issue has to be analyzed with a business state of mind," she said.

Mayor Susan Ben-Moshe said she loves her job and has been a responsive and inclusive official for the 12 years she's been in office.
Her challenger, Jeff Schwartzberg, said that, if elected, he would see that the village is run more like a business.
"I don't know what he means," Ben-Moshe said. "We have a very efficient staff who go to courses to perfect their knowledge of running the village, we balance our budgets, we respond to residents, we take care of the roads."
Ben-Moshe, 66, and a 20-year resident of the village, touts among her accomplishments the connection of about 25 homes to the Nassau County sewer system and the establishment of a tree maintenance and removal program in coordination with the State Emergency Management Office. 
Schwartzberg also said he would like to introduce term limits -- something Ben-Moshe said isn't needed at the 407-home village.
"Experience counts and makes a big difference," Ben-Moshe said. "I've established relationships with many people, local and state officials which once in a while can help the village. My experience is invaluable."
The mayor's seat is a two-year term.
Schwartzberg, 56, says he will rely on his business savvy to run the village.
"The village is a business that needs to be managed more proactively," he said. "I believe government should act more like business and focus on how it can do more for the stakeholders, our village residents." 
Schwartzberg suggested that trustee terms should be limited to six or eight years.
"Certainly nothing longer than the president of the United States," he said. "That's enough; you need the next person to come with fresh ideas."
Schwartzberg, a <a href="/topics/Real_Estate">real estate</a> executive based in <a href="/topics/Lake_Success%2C_NY">Lake Success</a>, has lived in the village since 2002. He has served as the chairman of the village zoning board for the past seven years.
"I'm running because I am deeply passionate about this community and I want to ensure it maintains, and, where necessary, returns to the values, vision and vigor that made Roslyn Estates one of the most desirable places to live, while being able to move forward," he said.

North Hempstead village races heat up

<a href="/topics/East_Rockaway%2C_NY">East Rockaway</a> 
The spending practices of the current <a href="/topics/East_Rockaway%2C_NY">East Rockaway</a> village board, which started to splinter after the unexpected July death of the longtime mayor, was the catalyst for two trustees to step up and contend for the vacant mayor position. 
The current deputy mayor, Richard J. Meagher, 72, joined other residents to form the Freedom Party in September, in a village he said previously was a one-party community. 
Meagher, former dean of the Fashion Institute of Technology in <a href="/topics/New_York%2C_NY">New York</a>, said one of his motivations in forming the party "was not to seek or accept" campaign funds from national parties. He is joined by running mates Robert Klose, 51, who works for the <a href="/topics/Lawrence%2C_NY">Lawrence</a> Village pollution control facility, and Harry Levitt, a local businessman. Klose and Levitt are running for two trustee seats. 
Meagher said he plans to try to freeze spending, but if mandates make that impossible he hopes to cap expenditures at a 2 percent increase. 
Incumbent trustee Francis Lenahan, 60, a former <a href="/topics/Nassau_County%2C_NY">Nassau</a> police detective, is running for mayor on the Village Pride Party line with trustee candidates Edward Corrado, 65, a retired <a href="/topics/Time_Warner_Inc.">Time Warner</a> employee, and Stanley Lombardo, 57, a mechanic supervisor for the Town of Hempstead. Lenahan said the three are "raising our own money" with private donations. They want to cut expenditures, especially two positions with salaries of $100,000 or more that have been vacant for the last few months -- building director and village administrator -- as well as a $110,000 outside recreational director position. 
Meagher argues that Lenahan was on the board when the contracts were approved, making it "hard to attach credibility" to his opponent's charge that the positions aren't necessary. But Lenahan said, while he did approve the original resolution to create the jobs under the late mayor, Ed Sieban, he now sees the positions are not necessary. 
"My mindset is to reduce the expenditures, reduce the costs to the people, which can be done through salary reductions, and not hiring back those two jobs," Lenahan said. 
Voting is from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Village Hall and seven other polling places.

Three <a href="/topics/Valley_Stream%2C_NY">Valley Stream</a> residents looking for relief from steeper insurance costs caused by a new federal flood map are running for the village board, putting current trustees on the defensive. 
Joseph Margolin, 66, a retired teacher and attorney, is running for mayor with Carol Crupi, 60, an executive sales assistant, and Michael LoCascio, 61, a private investigator, on the Citizens Independence Party. The trio are united behind what they say is a failing of the present administration to voice opposition to the new flood map, which put homes in the south end of the district, known as the Gibson area, into a flood zone when they hadn't been in one before. 
"The village government had an opportunity to object to the maps and chose to sign off and approved them," Margolin said. "They didn't put a bump in the road." 
Crupi said he has been fighting, as a private citizen, with the <a href="/topics/Federal_Emergency_Management_Agency">Federal Emergency Management Agency</a> over the mapping, but said that as a village official, "FEMA would have to deal with me on a different level." 
Edwin Fare, a teacher in the district and a current trustee running for mayor on the United Community Party slate, said the federal agency tied the board's hands. "We're on it," he said, saying they have been talking to FEMA. "I'm not sure what new people could do differently." 
Dermond Thomas, 34, a corporate finance lawyer, and Vincent Grasso, 38, executive director of the <a href="/topics/Nassau_County%2C_NY">Nassau</a> County Bridge Authority, are running with Fare, and said getting the flood map corrected is at the top of their wish list. But they said they also are concerned about quality-of-life issues, such as more recreational opportunities for youth, revitalizing the downtown and lowering the tax burden.

Bellerose 
The only issue in Bellerose Village where trustee and mayoral candidates can't find common ground centers on communication with residents. 
The village of about 370 homes has a website, but it's not updated that often, challengers said. 
"Big issues come and go without people in the village being aware of it," said Joseph Juliano, 47, an attorney and Integrity Party candidate for trustee. 
"I found that, after talking to a lot of Bellerose Village residents, they are expressing dissatisfaction over the lack of communication from the current government," said mayoral candidate Henry Schreiber, 73, a retired bank officer and Juliano's running mate. 
But Donna Sherrer, 54, who has been mayor for six years and is a member of the Community Party, points to achievements during her tenure such as the extension of the Village Hall senior center, the renovation of the historical police booth, and the creation of a master beautification plan -- which this year will include sidewalk work and bus depots on main streets, and upgrading the parks, much of it paid for with grant money. "I was able to get $600,000 in grants," she said. 
"We have been working together to improve the look of <a href="/topics/Jericho%2C_NY">Jericho</a> Turnpike," said Laura Tamparo, 60, a two-year trustee running with the Community Party. 
"We've planted over 100 trees in the past four years," said Ronald DeSouza, 54, an architect and eight-year trustee running with Sherrer. He also said the website was recently updated. 
Still, civility remains through the campaign. 
"We all want to get together as neighbors," said John Tweedy, 65, who is running for trustee on the Integrity Party line with Juliano and Schreiber. "I respect the work being done by those in charge now. But maybe it's time for a change." 
Voting is from noon to 9 p.m. at Village Hall.

Taxes are taking center stage in the <a href="/topics/Stewart_Manor%2C_NY">Stewart Manor</a> campaign, where two challengers and one incumbent are running for two open trustee seats. 
Keeping taxes in line is crucial to helping the village retain its quaintness, said challenger James Lynch, 45, a physician running on the Unity Party line. 
"I think the biggest thing is keeping this tiny, cute town operating in difficult economic times," Lynch said. "Everyone is getting hit, but with this little town, it's economy of scale . . . We all have different ideas on how to do it." 
Sally Martino-Fisher, 67, who is running on the <a href="/topics/Independent_Party">Independent Party</a> line, is retired as a <a href="/topics/New_York%2C_NY">New York</a> City employee, most recently as a manager in the city's Department of Consumer Affairs. She would like to expand services for senior citizens and work on infrastructure issues such as potholes, she said, while keeping taxes down. 
"I personally love this village," said Martino-Fisher. "I would hate to think I need to pick up and leave an area I enjoy because I can't afford the taxes."

Two incumbent <a href="/topics/Freeport%2C_NY">Freeport</a> trustees paint themselves as independent watchdogs on the village board and say the two challengers represent the mayor. 
Home Rule Party trustee William H. White Jr., 55, a partner at a general insurance agency in Freeport, and two-term incumbent Jorge <a href="/topics/Jorge_Martinez">Martinez</a>, 48, director of business development for an insurance company in <a href="/topics/Lynbrook%2C_NY">Lynbrook</a>, pointed to Mayor Andrew Hardwick for the lack of economic development in <a href="/topics/Freeport%2C_NY">Freeport</a>. "I consider the village a business," said Martinez, who has lived in Freeport for more than 35 years and is a past president of the <a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a> Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. "We need to make sure the money we make goes back out again." 
Freeport First Party challenger Annette Dennis, 51, a senior analyst for <a href="/topics/National_Grid">National Grid</a> who has lived in the village for 14 years, said she wants to promote economic development in Freeport through projects like North Main Street redevelopment. She also supports development around the Freeport <a href="/topics/Long_Island_Rail_Road">Long Island Rail Road</a> station. 
"We need economic development in the village," said Dennis, chairman of the Mayor's Citizen Advisory Committee. 
Jane Dugan, also running for the first time for the Freeport First Party, is the owner of JC Cove Restaurant in Freeport. Making the village more business friendly is the focus of her campaign, she said. 
"As a business owner I had experienced a lot of ups and downs in trying to open up a business," said Dugan, a former president of the Freeport Chamber of Commerce who has lived in the village for 17 years. 
Voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at various polling locations.

Hempstead Village 
Concerns about crime and the economy led five candidates to run for two Hempstead Village trustee seats. 
Incumbent Perry M. Pettus has partnered with a newcomer, the Rev. Waylyn Hobbs Jr., to run on the <a href="/topics/U.S._Democratic_Party">Democratic Party</a> and Community Party lines, while the other incumbent, Donald L. Ryan, is running with first-timer Jean Bligen under the Unity Party. The fifth candidate, Michael G. Abrahams, is running on the Change Now Party line. 
Ryan, 68, a high school teacher for 33 years, has been a trustee for almost 10 years. The Hempstead native said the North Main Street redevelopment project could help create more commercial development and jobs, and help reduce taxes for village residents. 
He also called for a village budget advisory board and "greater involvement by trustees and department heads about what stays on the budget and what does not." 
Bligen, 60, the former principal of <a href="/topics/Barack_Obama">Barack Obama</a> Elementary School, said her main concern is that the village offers too many tax breaks. Both candidates said they want to expand youth programs to help lessen gang violence and drug use. 
Three-time trustee Pettus, 54, the owner of a towing company in Hempstead, also addressed concerns about crime and his support for the North Main Street project, which he said he hopes will reduce the tax burden on residents. Pettus has lived in the village since 1964. 
Hobbs, 48, the pastor of <a href="/topics/Coney_Island%2C_NY">Coney Island</a> Cathedral Church, former village code enforcement officer and volunteer firefighter who has lived in the village for 40 years, stressed reducing residents' tax burden and attracting new businesses. 
Abrahams, 44, a former Hempstead Village administrator, said he wants to prevent crime, fix roads, clean up litter and hire more government employees who live in the village. Abrahams, who has lived in the village for 33 years, said the level of village employee salaries and pensions needs to be addressed.

A tea party candidate faces two incumbents from the <a href="/topics/Independent_Party">Independent Party</a> for two <a href="/topics/Malverne%2C_NY">Malverne</a> trustee seats. 
Challenger Dr. John Hassett Jr., 41, a pulmonologist in Hempstead, medical director of the <a href="/topics/Malverne%2C_NY">Malverne</a> Volunteer Ambulance Corp and physician for the village police department, is running for the first time. The 38-year resident has challenged the board for privately conducting work sessions, paying the police chief what he said was "too much money" and for providing lifetime health insurance benefits to employees and elected officials with five years' tenure with the village. 
"They should be public servants," said Hassett, "not act like public officials." 
Incumbent Michael T. Bailey, 56, a marketing and advertising executive finishing his first four-year term, cited among his accomplishments helping to save Grossmann's Farm. The 25-year resident said he plans to develop the first community center in the village on a parcel donated by the Grossmann family. 
He also wants to expand the Malverne Volunteer Ambulance Corp. and improve its response time, Bailey said. 
James Callahan III, 42, attorney and commissioner of the <a href="/topics/Nassau_County%2C_NY">Nassau</a> County Office of Emergency Management, has been a trustee for 12 years. Callahan, who has lived in the village for 16 years, cited creating the village's Emergency Management Committee as among his accomplishments. He previously served as the village's emergency manager and its prosecutor. In addition to public safety issues, Callahan said he has focused on pocketbook issues by keeping taxes from increasing rapidly. 
"We need to keep taxes as low as we can," Callahan said. "In a small village . . . that is very important." 
Voting will be held from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Malverne Fire House, 30 <a href="/topics/Broadway%2C_NY">Broadway</a>.

The need for change brought three newcomers, under the <a href="/topics/Garden_City%2C_NY">Garden City</a> Residents Party, to challenge <a href="/topics/Garden_City%2C_NY">Garden City</a>'s long-standing Community Agreement Party for the five open trustee seats. 
Raymond J. Rudolph, Ronald A. Tadross and Thomas J. Trypuc formed the Residents slate after claiming that the village property owners association kept choosing the same candidates for the Community Agreement Party. 
Tadross, 39, a financial adviser, had an unsuccessful write-in campaign last year. The village's administration lacks accountability and needs to be more transparent, he said. 
Trypuc, 59, a retired auditor and accountant, called for reduced spending, saying benefits given to the village staff are "too generous." He served on the Garden City Budget Committee in 2009. 
Rudolph, 43, owner of a general construction company in <a href="/topics/Queens%2C_NY">Queens</a>, said the board needed more people with financial expertise to help review the budget. 
The three candidates hope to defeat one-term trustees Laurence J. Quinn, Dennis C. Donnelly, Andrew J. Cavanaugh and Community Agreement Party candidate John A. DeMaro. 
Quinn, 53, a science teacher at Sewanhaka High School for 30 years, cites the fact the mayor and the seven trustees serve without compensation. 
Donnelly, 64, a former director of government affairs for Verizon, said he planned, as chairman of the village's War Memorial Committee, to put all the memorials throughout the village into a new plaza. 
Cavanaugh, 64, a retired businessman and lawyer, said he opposed the plan to build the Nassau Hub near the <a href="/topics/Nassau_Coliseum">Nassau Coliseum</a> because "overdevelopment can take away the suburban character of the neighborhood." 
DeMaro, 43, an intellectual property attorney and president of the Garden City Estates Property Owners Association, is running for the first time. He said he wants to survey residents about issues affecting them. 
Voting will take place from noon to 9 p.m. at Garden City Village Hall, 351 Stewart Ave.
