Voters to decide on spending $13M for Hamptons beaches

Elections will be held in February in two newly-created special erosion districts in Southampton Town to approve spending on beach erosion control measures over the next 10 years.

Both special elections will be in Southampton Town Hall on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with each district proposing a property tax levy of more than $13 million.

Southampton Town Clerk Sundy A. Schermeyer will send notices to eligible voters in each district, advising them on how to request an absentee ballot since many summer homeowners are not expected to be in Southampton on the day of the vote.

Bridgehampton erosion district residents will vote on a proposed levy of $13,143,350, while Sagaponack residents will vote on a proposed levy of $13,364,500.

The money would be used to move sand to the beach when needed, and to monitor beach conditions as required by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The elections are independent of each other. Results in one district have no effect on the other district.
