Voting today on Babylon Town outdoor smoking ban
The Babylon Town Board is scheduled to vote today on a bill banning smoking at town parks, beaches, playgrounds and pools.
“This is something constituents have come to us in the past requesting,” town spokesman Tim Ruggeri said.
The bill cites the health risks of secondhand smoke as well as tobacco odor and cigarette butt litter.
The legislation also would outlaw smoking within 50 feet of town buildings and facilities, but it leaves open the possibility that designated smoking areas could be created.
Town safety officers could fine violators $50 to $250.
At least six other Long Island towns and villages as well as New York City already have passed similar measures. The Long Island Rail Road bans smoking on train platforms.
