Wading River cracks down on illegal apartments

A Wading River home was illegally subdivided into apartments, according to Brookhaven code inspectors who investigated the Randall Road property this month.

During the Feb. 6 inspection, the single-family house was found to have been converted into four apartments, including two in the basement and one over the garage. The house also lacked proper smoke detectors in the bedrooms, town officials said.

Other infractions included tires and an unregistered vehicle on the property. The owner of the property, who was not identified by the town, was issued 10 appearance tickets.

“The property owner of this illegal multifamily home will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said town Supervisor Mark Lesko in a release. “I thank our Quality of Life Task Force for the job that they do every day to clean up our neighborhoods and for cracking down on serial offenders and property owners who blatantly disregard our laws.”

“Illegal multifamily houses are a detriment to the neighborhood and a threat to the health and safety of those who live there,” said councilwoman Jane Bonner in the release.

The Quality of Life Task Force was created to enforce town code, eliminate blight and target negligent property owners. If Brookhaven residents have complaints about properties violating town code, they can call 631-451-TOWN to file a complaint.
