Your article "Taking winter in stride" [News, Dec. 18] made me feel good. I am almost 67 years old, and walking keeps me feeling young and vigorous. When the weather dips to the 20s, I wear a sun visor, woolen hat, hooded sweatshirt, heavy down jacket, woolen scarf, gloves and sometimes earmuffs. Beneath all those layers are headphones attached to a tiny portable radio around my neck. I look ridiculous, but I'm toasty warm and feel refreshed during the 45-minute walk.

I am inspired by my wonderful mom, who passed away 10 years ago. She underwent three open-heart surgeries, and it was her daily walking that kept her heart strong despite her heart disease.

Walking has become a way of life for me and I can't imagine not doing it. It is the key to keeping my muscles, bones, and heart in great shape. My husband has now joined me and we both enjoy the exercise and conversations.
