The North Shore Land Alliance released its calendar of events for 2011 Tuesday, with its “Walks in the Woods” events taking center stage.

The Old Westbury-based land trust dedicated to protecting parks on the North Shore is holding several walks this year. The program is designed to educate community members about the various nature preserves on the North Shore as well as in other areas.

The 2011 walks will kick off at 10 a.m. Jan. 29 with a trip through multiple NSLA preserves. Those who wish to attend can meet up at the Oyster Bay train station and carpool from there.

On May 14 the group will be trekking through Shu Swamp and Upper Francis Pond in Mill Neck at 8 a.m. The trip is part of a collaboration with the Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society, which is dedicated to increasing community awareness about the environment and encouraging others to enjoy and protect birds and other wildlife in their natural habitats.

The Walks in the Woods program started with a couple of outings in 2007, according to NSLA Associate Director of Stewardship, Jane Jackson. Now the organization hosts a walk through a preserve nearly once a month.

“We do it to get people out to places to appreciate open space and all there is around here,” she said. “We try to get people to places a little bit off the beaten path.”
