Walsh's putback a winner for Smithtown East
Dan Walsh scored on a putback with six seconds left to give Smithtown East (4-4) a 50-49 victory over West Islip Thursday in Suffolk League III boys basketball. West Islip (0-7) had taken a 49-48 lead on Alan Tang's three-pointer with 20 seconds left, but the Lions missed a shot at the buzzer. Jon Feiler led Smithtown East with 13 points and Dan Thixton added 10. Kyle Turri scored a game-high 20 points for West Islip.
Newfield 63, Half Hollow Hills East 53: Nana Nsiahyeboah had 12 points and Travis Simon scored 10 and had four steals off the bench to help Newfield (6-2 League III) clinch its first playoff berth since 2006. Brandon Piscak added 12 rebounds and Jeren Hall had 11. Hills East is 4-4.East Islip 47, Centereach 36: Brian Johnson scored nine of his 15 points in the fourth quarter to help East Islip (8-0) hold off Centereach, which pulled within three points early in the fourth quarter. Billy Garzon scored a game-high 20 points for Centereach (3-5).Half Hollow Hills West 82, Copiague 60: Tobias Harris had 23 points and 14 rebounds for Half Hollow Hills West (9-0) in League IV. Tyler Harris had 19 points and Tavon Sledge added 15 points and 14 assists. Nasha Smith led Copiague (6-3) with 23 points.Eastport-South Manor 52, Deer Park 50: Daulton McCarthy had 13 points and Ryan Curley went 5-for-6 from the foul line in the last 1:38 to help clinch the win for Eastport-South Manor (2-7). Alan Henderson led ESM with nine rebounds and Curley had eight assists. Deer Park is 4-5.
Bayport-Blue Point 59, Glenn 49: Ross Drzal had eight of his 10 points in a 21-7 second quarter for Bayport-Blue Point (10-1) in League VI. Roshawn Polight had 17 points to lead Glenn (6-5).Center Moriches 56, Southampton 45: Jon Ward-Adams had 24 points, six assists and four steals and Joe Gonzales 11 points and 14 rebounds for Center Moriches (9-1) in League VII.Southampton is 6-4.
Hampton Bays 73, Wyandanch 68: Cameron Booth scored 20 points, including 11 of 16 from the free-throw line, for Hampton Bays (6-4). The junior added a career-high nine assists. Senior Ryan Walker scored seven of his career-high 17 points in a 21-14 third quarter, and Bruno Cavallo chipped in with 15 points and nine rebounds. Qualice Jones led Wyandanch (9-1) with a game-high 29 points.
