Wanted: Large, old shaggy dogs

It’s a starring role, but the pay’s for the dogs.
The John W. Engeman Theater at Northport is holding an open audition on Sunday
There’s no pay for the owner of the winning dog, but associate producing director Vic DiMonda said the lucky animal will likely get plenty of attention and treats from the cast and crew.
DiMonda said he’s looking for dogs that don’t quite live up to the name Horrid — ideally a dog that’s old, shaggy, docile and friendly, one “that’s seen better days.”
The play calls for the animal to appear in one scene, accompanying a reluctant King Pellinore.
“Pellinore does not like him,” DiMonda said. “In fact, Pellinore spends many a page saying just how horrid Horrid is.”
Sheepdogs are preferred, he said, but Labrador and golden retrievers, Wheaten terriers and similar-looking dogs will be considered.
DiMonda said owners will be asked to introduce their dogs at the audition, then leave the room so DiMonda and his associates can assess the animal’s temperament and response to commands.
“Camelot” will open at the theater in September.
