With the Seaford Little League, Long Island Greyhounds Softball travel team and community leaders on hand, Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano officially rededicated Washington Avenue Park in Seaford on Sunday.

The park, which had fallen into disrepair, was given a $1.1 million facelift.

“Washington Avenue Park is a true local treasure, and these renovations will ensure that the park will be enjoyed by everyone in the community,” Mangano said.

The park was a primary project of the Seaford Wellness Council, which helped restore the park with funds secured via the Environmental Bond Acts of 2004 and 2006 and Nassau County’s Capital Improvement fund.

Mangano led the re-dedication ceremony and delivered the ceremonial first pitch on a rejuvenated ball field.

“The field was a sump. It was unplayable,” said Seaford Little League vice president and coach Robert Jordan. “It’s great to have it back.”

The previously neglected baseball fields were given two synthetic turf infields, re-seeded natural grass outfields, improved drainage systems, new fencing, and new stands for spectators, new dugouts, restroom facilities and concessions.

Additionally, new playgrounds for pre-school and school-aged children are complaint with Americans with Disabilities Act regulations.

“I played here as a kid,” said Ken Nersesian, vice president of the Seaford Wellness Council. “I was appalled at the condition of the park. It was truly a community effort to bring it back. Ten, fifteen years from now, I’d love to have my grandkids play here.”
