A sunny Mother's Day, then a rainy week

Long Island will get a sparkling Mother's Day with sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-to upper 70s, before clouds come in on Monday and bring a consistent chance of rain through the next week, according to the National Weather Service.

The high Sunday will be 78 degrees, as a high pressure system whisked the overnight rains out into the ocean, said Tim Morrin, observation program leader with the National Weather Service in Upton.

"A splendid day with bright sunshine," Morrin said. "It'll be hard to find a cloud."

There will be an overnight low Sunday night of 53 degrees.

But starting on Monday, there will be an off and on threat of rain and thunderstorms, although temperatures will remain in the 60s and slightly above normal, Morrin said.

"There will be plenty of periods that it's not raining, but there'll be clouds around," he said.

There will be a chance of showers on Monday afternoon, with high temperatures of 76 degrees.

Tuesday will be mostly cloudy, with a slight chance of showers in morning and a high of 69 degrees. Wednesday and Thursday there will be a 40 percent chance of showers throughout the day, with high temperatures dropping slightly to the lower 60s.

On Friday, showers are likely with a chance of thunderstorms and a high temperature of 67 degrees.

The early forecast for next Saturday will be partly sunny with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms and a high of 67 degrees.
