An air quality health advisory has been issued for Long Island for most of Wednesday, the state Department of Environmental Conservation said.

Department meteorologists are predicting high ozone levels for a large area and said the air-quality advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m.

Hot weather is among the factors for the advisory, which calls for pollution by ozone and fine particulate matters likely to exceed an air quality index value of 100.

The index was created to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale; the higher the index value, the greater the health concern, according to the DEC.

Typically, people with respiratory diseases, those exercise or work outdoors, and children should consider limiting physical activity when the ozone levels are elevated, the release said.

Most of the time, ozone levels are reduced at night.

The DEC has a toll-free air quality hotline, 800-535-1345. More information also is at www.dec.ny.gov and www.health.ny.gov/environmental/outdoors/air/ozone.htm.
