Temperatures slightly colder than normal greeted Long Islanders early Wednesday, but warmer weather is on the way, the National Weather Service said.

Long Island MacArthur Airport recorded a low of 27 at 6:11 a.m., just off the record low for the day of 24 set in 2001, said Lauren Nash, a meteorologist with the Upton-based service.

The service issued a freeze warning for Nassau and Suffolk counties until 10 a.m.

Nash said most of Long Island will be about 10 degrees colder than normal Wednesday, because of lingering Arctic air at the back end of a departing cold front.

It was 32 degrees just before 9 a.m. in Ronkonkoma.

The average low for Wednesday is 38, she said. But the colder weather should be replaced Thursday, when a high-pressure system from the south climbs into the Northeast.

"We have just one day of this," Nash said. "Tonight it will be chilly again, with temperatures in the mid to upper 20s.

"Then the high pressure moves, and that will warm things up," Nash said.

High temperatures for Thursday and Friday are expected to be in the low to mid 50s, the service said.
