Firefighters were battling a blaze early Wednesday morning at the Bay Park sewage treatment plant in East Rockaway, Nassau County officials said.

The fire started about 1:30 a.m. in the maintenance building, county fire communications official said.

At least six fire departments responded, including East Rockaway, Oceanside, Lynbrook, Rockville Centre, Lakeview and Valley Stream, the county fire official said.

It's not clear whether the fire is related to superstorm Sandy, which damaged the plant, thus leaving residents in the southern half of Nassau without the ability to flush toilets.

On Tuesday, Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano issued a conserve-water order to residents affected by the plant's critical infrastructure failure after the storm.
