Cool and cloudy conditions and perhaps some stray showers on Friday give way to sunny skies and warmer temperatures for the Belmont Stakes.

When American Pharoah makes his bid Saturday for horse-racing's Triple Crown, temperatures in the mid to upper 70s are expected across Long Island, the National Weather Service's Upton office said.

Post time for the race at Belmont Park is 6:50 p.m.

Saturday marks a return of summerlike weather after a stretch of cooler-than-normal temperatures, including most of Friday, which calls for clouds and daily highs in the low to mid 60s.

There's a chance of stray showers throughout the day Friday, with some patchy fog and showers again developing overnight and into Saturday morning, News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said.

Daily highs Friday range from 62 to 67 degrees with fog moving in overnight when lows drop to the mid 50s, Hoffman said.

Mostly the "weekend will be warmer with more sunshine," Hoffman said.

In addition to Saturday, which will have some morning clouds, Sunday's high temperatures should be in the high 60s to low 70s, Hoffman said, with partly sunny skies.
