Black ice and frigid temperatures greeted Long Islanders on the first weekday of 2011, kicking off what's looking like a chilly week that could end in more snow.
The National Weather Service warned motorists Monday to beware of black ice caused by the refreezing of standing water on roadways and sidewalks, which is likely to persist all morning.
The formation of black ice was fed by temperatures in the 20s that felt even colder due to wind gusts.
Highs today are likely to be in the mid-30s, with lows tonight back in the mid-20s.
Temperatures aren't forecast to climb out of the 30s all week, with a chance of snow on Thursday and Friday, according to the Weather Service.
