Dry, breezy conditions could enhance the spreading of brush fires, the National Weather Service said Thursday.

In a special weather statement the Upton-based service said that Nassau and Suffolk counties could be susceptible to brush fires because of continuing dry conditions and a drop in relative humidity.

"Relative humidity is expected to decrease to around 30 percent" by Thursday afternoon while "wind gusts will be 20 to 25 mph," the special statement said.

"This combination of weather conditions along with the dry landscape will cause an enhanced spread of brush fires" should there be ignition.

The forecast through Sunday includes dry, sunny weather with daytime temperatures in the 50s.

The chance for rain Sunday and Monday ranges from 40 to 60 percent, the service said.
