Long Island is in for some autumnal weather this week, in contrast to the record-breaking heat of a few days ago.

Clouds and misty conditions will start off the week on Long Island, according to the National Weather Service.

Sunday will see patchy fog, with highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s, said Joey Picca, meteorologist with the service's Upton bureau. Lows on Sunday will be in the lower 60s.

A chance of showers will linger through the day and into the night, bringing much-needed rain to the region. Picca said the area received about half as much rain as it usually would during the month of September.

While two heat records were broken last Wednesday and Friday, don't expect anything similar this week. Monday will warm up slightly, with highs in the mid- to upper 70s. But the chance for showers will increase throughout the day, courtesy of a cold front approaching from the west, Picca said. Monday night's lows will be in the lower to mid-50s.

Tuesday will be dry, with highs in the lower 70s. Lows will be in the mid-50s.

The dry spell will continue throughout the week, with highs through the rest of the week in the upper 60s to lower 70s, with a mix of clouds and sun. Lows will be in the lower 50s.
