Plenty of clouds and a slight chance of rain, mainly in the afternoon, is ahead Thursday for Long Island, the National Weather Service said.

Daily highs across Nassau and Suffolk counties will be near 60 with winds from the south-southwest at 5 to 10 mph, the service's Upton office said.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said any rain over the next 24 hours "will be on the light side."

The chance of rain is 30 percent, mainly in the early afternoon, with the South Shore and East End the most likely areas to get precipitation, Hoffman said.

There will be some breaks of sunshine with a few spotty afternoon showers possible, he said.

Thursday night calls for cloudy skies with another bout of scattered showers. Overnight lows of near 50 degrees are expected.

There's a chance of morning rain Friday with gradual clearing in the afternoon.

The service did issue a special statement on the enhanced risk of brush fires for the Memorial Day weekend through Wednesday.

Starting Friday, the growth and spread of any fires may be enhanced by gusting winds and low relative humidity levels, the service said.
