Coastal flood advisory for Nassau's South Shore

A coastal flood advisory is in effect Monday night for the South Shore of Nassau County during times of high tide, according to the National Weather Service.

The advisory for ocean-facing shorelines and back bays is in effect from 7 to 10 p.m., with tidal departures of a half foot to 1 foot, the service said in its advisory.

Minor coastal flooding is also possible around midnight along the coastline of western and central Long Island Sound, with tidal departures about a half foot above normal, the service said.

Tidal departures of one half to 1 foot above normal are also expected in the western portions of Peconic Bay.

A flood advisory that had been in effect for parts of Nassau and Suffolk counties until 1:45 p.m. has since expired.

The Upton-based service had said a "thunderstorm forming along the sea breeze front across central Queens will be capable of producing heavy rainfall."

The advisory, for western Suffolk and northern Nassau, said rainfall rates of one-half to three-quarters of an inch an hour were possible.

A previous flood advisory for western Nassau expired at 1 p.m.
