Gradually clearing skies and unseasonably cool temperatures are expected on Long Island Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

The service's Upton office forecasts daily highs in the mid to upper 60s across Nassau and Suffolk counties, with northeast winds around 10 mph.

High pressure builds over the Northeast and then slowly moves off the coast Wednesday and Thursday, generating slightly cooler than normal temperatures until the weekend.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said a mix of sun and clouds Wednesday gives way to increasing clouds and overnight lows in the low to mid 50s.

Thursday and Friday, daily highs climb slightly with partly cloudy skies once again. Thursday calls for daily highs in the mid 60s, Friday in the upper 60s to low 70s.

Hoffman said the drier conditions on the weekend include Saturday when American Pharoah goes for horse-racing's Triple Crown at Belmont Park.

Race-time conditions are expected to be partly sunny with temperatures near 73 degrees, he said.
