A dense fog advisory has been issued for Long Island overnight and into Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service said.

The advisory is in effect from midnight until 9 a.m., as dense fog is expected to develop and persist into the midmorning hours, the service said.

The advisory "means visibilities will frequently be reduced to one quarter mile or less," the service said. Drivers are urged to slow down, use low beam headlights, and "leave plenty of distance ahead . . . in case a sudden stop is needed," the advisory says.
