Fog began rolling in around sunset Tuesday and was expected to drastically reduce visibility for Long Island motorists overnight and into Wednesday morning, according to a National Weather Service forecast Tuesday evening.

"We're starting to see visibility drop as fog moves in and we could have visibility between a quarter mile to a half mile, and occasionally lower," said David Stark, a meteorologist with the weather service in Upton. On a typical clear day visibility would be between 7 miles and 10 miles, Stark said.

"If you're driving, slow down and use your low beam headlights, and give yourself more space," he said.

The foggy conditions should clear after 9 a.m., leaving a day with some clouds in the morning, and a chance of showers, Stark said, but Thursday should be a clear, sunny day.
