Dry, windy weather raises brushfire risk

Breezy, dry conditions could enhance the spread of brushfires Tuesday on Long Island the National Weather Service said in a special weather statement.

The Upton-based service issued the statement before 4 a.m. for Nassau and Suffolk counties and parts of Connecticut and New Jersey.

Northwest winds in Nassau and Suffolk are likely to gust from 25 to 30 mph and relative humidity could drop to 30 percent or slightly lower during afternoon hours, the service said.

Should there be ignition, the combination of weather conditions, along with a dry landscape, will cause "an enhanced spread of brushfires," the special weather statement said.

Winds should subside later Tuesday, with daily temperatures in the mid to high 40s and nightly lows in the mid 20s.
