A chance of showers and thunderstorms will give way to warm, dry weather by the end of the week, according to the National Weather Service.
Sunday brings a mixture of sun and clouds to Long Island, with a possible shower or thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening, said David Stark, meteorologist in the service's Upton bureau. Highs on Sunday will be in the upper 70s, with lows in the low to mid-60s.
Temperatures will warm up slightly for Monday, with sunny skies for most of the day and highs in the low 80s. Stark said a weak cold front will move in Monday afternoon, bringing with it a possibility of another shower or thunderstorm that could linger into Tuesday. Lows on Monday will be in the mid-60s.
Highs on Tuesday will be in the upper 70s, with lows in the upper 50s.
Wednesday through Friday are forecast to be dry and pleasant, with highs in the mid- to upper 70s and lows in the mid-50s, Stark said.
So far, this month is the fifth-wettest June since the agency started keeping records for the area in 1984, Stark said. Total rainfall for June to date is 7.83 inches, still short of the record 10.8 inches set for the month in 2003.
