Long island is pretty much off the hook when it comes to heavy downpours on Tuesday, forecasters say.

The potential had been for some real drenchers, but “the latest trends continue to push the heaviest rainfall to the south,” the National Weather Service said Tuesday afternoon.

The main impact looks to be over the ocean and southern New Jersey, said Tim Morrin, weather service meteorologist.

The Island has been getting showers, with most areas seeing a tenth to a quarter of an inch, as of late afternoon, he said. The outlier was Orient Point, which registered an inch.

Look for showers – “very, very spotty” -- moving through the area over the evening hours, Morrin said.  A brief, heavy downpour can’t be ruled out, he said, but it would be so short-lived that no flooding impacts are expected.

Wednesday morning brings just the slightest chance of showers in some areas, then dry skies and temperatures rising to the low 80s.
