Outside chance of Monday evening rain for Long Island but flash flood risk is over

While rain was forecast to continue into the early Monday evening hours, the concerns of flash flooding in Nassau and Suffolk County have passed, according to the National Weather Service.

By 1 p.m., neither county remained under a flash flood advisory, according to weather service meteorologist Bryan Ramsey.

"We do have one more little weak line of showers coming through," Ramsey said about 4:30 p.m. "It'll be pretty isolated and just within the next hour. After that a front will come through that's going to dry us out."

This last splash of rain will close out a Monday marred by a series of showers and thunderstorms that swept across the Island "generally" from the southwest to the northeast, Ramsey said. The meteorologist estimated parts of northeastern Suffolk received around 2 to 3 inches of rainfall Monday, followed by 1.5 to 2.5 inches in northern Nassau, 1 to 2 inches western and central Suffolk and less than 1 inch on the East End.

"In generally, the Island saw anyway from half an inch to 3 inches," Ramsey added.

Tuesday, morning fog should burn away and the sun will come out, with a high of about 81 degrees.

It's possible some isolated rain could strike again Wednesday evening, but it's more likely that the next rainfall across the Island arrives Thursday afternoon and evening, he said.

Anyone considering heading to the beach should consider staying on the land, as the weather service issued a high rip current risk advisory, meaning swimmers could get swept from the sand into the ocean, through Tuesday evening. The agency also issued a high surf advisory, warning of waves up to eight feet high, through Monday evening.

"Anyone visiting the beaches should stay out of the surf," the weather service said in the rip current advisory. "Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water."
