Flood advisory expires in Suffolk
A severe thunderstorm warning and subsequent flood advisory have both been lifted for Suffolk County, but the threat of storms still remains Friday, the National Weather Service said.
Shortly before 1 p.m. thunderstorms moved northeast across northern Suffolk, the weather service said. More than an inch of rain was reported, forecasters said.
A severe thunderstorm warning expired at 12:45 p.m. because the storms slightly weakened, the weather service said. The flood advisory expired an hour later.
These storms come after a flood advisory issued Friday morning for northern Nassau and later western Suffolk was lifted at 11:30 a.m., the weather service said.
Between 1.5 inches and 2 inches of rain fell across that advisory area, and "excessive runoff" caused some minor flooding, the weather service said in a 10:42 a.m. advisory.
Thunderstorms remain in the forecast Friday, with a few of them capable of producing "gusty or even damaging winds," the National Weather Service said in a hazardous weather outlook.
"An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out . . . especially during the morning hours," the weather service said in the outlook issued at 4:15 a.m.
Forecasters say expect periods of rain, with a southeast wind at 10 mph to 13 mph. The chance of rain is 90 percent, with a high temperature in the lower 70s.
There's also a high rip current risk in effect through Friday evening for Atlantic Ocean beaches, with the surf height 3 feet to 5 feet.
