Another winter storm is on the way, with this one expected to dump 8 inches or more of snow on Long Island — the bulk of it falling early Monday into the afternoon, forecasters said.

Snow is expected to fall sometime between 7 and 10 p.m. Sunday, becoming light to moderate overnight, National Weather Service meteorologist David Stark said Friday.

The snowfall rate shouldn't be as high as in previous storms: Between 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m.; and another 2 to 4 inches between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m., Stark said.

The timing means expect a messy, potentially hazardous, Monday morning commute, forecasters said.

While there's still some uncertainty about the timing, the snowfall should taper off Monday afternoon into the evening rush, with not much accumulation during that time, Stark said.

The weather service's hazardous weather outlook, which usually covers a seven-day span, said "any change in the track and intensity of the system may have an impact on the amount and type of precipitation expected."

Stark said that, with temperatures in the 20s overnight, expect a dry, fluffy snow.

A lingering frigid air mass, meanwhile, meant record cold Friday on Long Island, which saw a record daily low temperature of 10 degrees, the National Weather Service said.

The temperature at 6:32 a.m. at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma erased the previous daily mark of 13 set in 1994, the service's Upton office said.

Skies are likely to be sunny and clear before the storm front moves in, forecasters said.

Until the storm arrives, Long Island can expect frigid cold, the service said. There's also the chance Saturday's daily record low of 14 in 1994 could fall, according to the forecast.
