Forecast: Friday a washout on LI
The rain that greeted Friday morning commuters is expected to stick around for most of the day, at times becoming heavy, the National Weather Service said.
Lauren Nash, a meteorologist with the Upton-based service, said Long Islanders can expect rain “all day,” with some clearing later in the evening.
Nash said the back line of a system that dropped heavy rain Friday morning in Staten Island, Queens and parts of New Jersey is responsible for the wet weather.
That system has some “imbedded areas,” she said, that could bring heavy rainfall to some isolated areas. Those areas could get a quarter inch to a half inch of rain, according to the service.
Chance of precipitation for Friday is 90 percent, the service said, with some areas expected to have flooding.
Nash said it is difficult to predict where the heaviest rains might strike, but on Friday morning the areas included northern Nassau County, a stretch on the North Fork and Queens, she said.
By the evening, chance of precipitation is 30 percent, with most of the rain coming before midnight.
By Saturday, the system will be gone, she said, leaving a mostly sunny day with a high of 83.
However, with a low-pressure system moving in on Sunday, there is a 30 percent chance of rain. Showers are expected after a clear morning.
The service said rain is expected again by midweek, with the chance of precipitation between 30 percent and 40 percent for Wednesday and Thursday.
