Brace yourself: A shot of cold Candian air will send temperatures plunging to below freezing overnight — and it will feel colder, forecasters say.
And those dreaded winter words — wind chill — are back in the forecast.
"The coldest air mass of the fall" is sweeping in from southern Canada, the National Weather Service said.
Overnight Monday, for Long Island, there will be gusty winds of up to 22 mph and wind chill values of between 25 and 30 degrees. The actual low temperature will be about 31 degrees, the weather service said.
Tuesday will be sunny with similar wind chills, and lower gusts, while still breezy, and a high of just 41 degrees.
Wednesday, the wind chills are slightly worse, between 20 and 30 degrees, and the high is 45 degrees with abundant sunshine, forecasters said.
But Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, will provide an appropriate respite. Temperatures will climb to the mid 50s and the sun will shine, the weather service said.
A 40% chance of showers will mar Thursday night into Friday, overnight, with a similar chance for showers Friday, the forecast says.
The weekend looks to be sunny and clear but daytime highs return to the mid 40s.
