An autumn chill stopped in for a brief visit Monday but, starting Tuesday, temperatures will again be on the rise this week on Long Island, forecasters said.

Monday's high of 60 degrees, along with gusty winds, made for the coolest day on Long Island since May, according to the National Weather Center.

But Tuesday's high will be 65 degrees and Wednesday and Thursday will climb to the low 70s, forecasters said.

Daytime conditions this week will remain mostly sunny until Thursday night, when there is a chance of showers.

Then fall makes its presence known again and Friday, while still sunny, will top out in the high 60s before a sharp drop over the weekend, the weather service says.

Friday night, temperatures will drop to the high 40s and Saturday night could see a low in the high 30s, the weather service said. Highs Saturday and Sunday will be in the mid 50s.

Then the following week starts with Monday's high just in the high 50s, the weather service said.

The cool-down is in contrast to the late-summer warmth that has recently prevailed on Long Island.

The average high for this time of year is 64 degrees and the average low is 51, the weather service said.

The odds of showers on Thursday night and stopping by around 8 a.m. on Friday are about 30%.
