Long Island forecast: Showers Monday; more rain through week
Much-needed rain overnight continued to fall off and on Sunday across much of Long Island with similar conditions forecast for a good part of the week.
Forecasters expect "continued rounds of rain" to fall on Long Island through Tuesday as a low-pressure system "inches east" across the region, according to Dominic Ramunni, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton.
After a low Sunday evening in the mid-50s, Monday "looks wet," Ramunni said. "The rain could fall heavy at times," with a chance of thunderstorms, though there could be "lulls here and there."
The high will reach just 60 degrees with the overnight low again about 55.
Heavy rain continues Tuesday, possibly tapering off Tuesday evening to showers with similar temperatures.
Wednesday and Thursday bring a mix of clouds and sun, along with a 30% chance of showers and a high near 70.
Ramunni predicted this "steady feed of moisture from the Atlantic" over the next couple of days could drop a total of 2-3 inches of rain on Long Island, possibly more in some areas. There may be localized flooding, he said, but probably limited.
The rain would help make up for a recent deficit: In April, Long Island got just under 2 inches of rain (recorded at Islip) — half the average for April rainfall for the past 20 years, according to NWS records. A few days of steady rain also helps dampen the risk of wildfire, which thrive dry, gusty conditions.
"It may finally start to dry out toward Wednesday," Ramunni said, with partly sunny skies and warmer temperatures approaching 70.
Thursday will begin party sunny, but there’s a 30% chance of showers in the afternoon and 40% overnight. High will be about 67, dropping to 47 overnight.
