Mild week ahead, but winter’s not over, forecasters say

Long Islanders will enjoy a short “spring break” this week, with higher-than-normal temperatures.

But winter isn’t over yet, meteorologists said.

Sunday was record-setting, with a high temperature of 65 degrees in Islip, besting the 1997 high of 60 degrees there. On Monday, temperatures will be in the upper 40s to around 50 degrees, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Pollina. That’s about 10 degrees higher than normal for this time of year, he said.

“Sometimes spring is hard to come by on the Island, but this is an early taste of it,” said Pollina, who is based in Upton.

Tuesday’s forecast is closer to average temperatures, with highs in the low- to mid-40s, but Wednesday and Thursday will bring highs in the 50s to Long Island, he said. Some areas of Nassau County could even see temperatures in the 60s on Thursday, though the Twin Forks will be colder.

But winter is still here. News 12 Long Island meteorologist Bruce Avery said a “very good possibility” of another snowstorm remains.

“The temperatures were more like the middle of April than the middle of February,” he said of Sunday. “This is kind of a spring break in winter.”
