Forecast: Sunny weekend to follow rain late Friday

Warm weekend temperatures and sunshine are in store for Long Island after a brief bout with rain late Friday and into Saturday morning, the National Weather Service said.

The service's Upton office said there is up to a 90 percent chance of rain for most of Nassau and Suffolk counties, with total amounts likely not to exceed one-quarter inch.

What follows is a weekend of mostly sunny skies and 60-degree temperatures.

Meteorologist Joey Picca, of the Upton office, said rain is likely to start falling by late afternoon Friday, "probably after 5 or 6 p.m."

Picca said it's not a large rain event, with the system moving west to east.

Expect intermittent rain most of Friday night and into Saturday morning.

"In terms of it ending, the last of the rain should be before or around sunrise Saturday," he said.

Afterward, Mother Nature will provide three days of temperatures in the low to mid 60s, with sunny skies and winds less than 15 mph.

"It looks like a nice weekend," Picca said. "There could be cooler temperatures on the southern portion of the Island as we go through each day because of sea breezes and cooler water temperatures."

Nighttime lows are in the mid 40s until Monday. Sunday night and Monday morning could bring stretches of patchy fog, the service said.

Rain re-enters the forecast starting Tuesday, the service said, because of "a cold front slowly approaching from the west."
