April might really be the cruelest month: The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning for Suffolk County into Tuesday morning, just days after temperatures soared into the 80s in Nassau and Suffolk.

The weather service initially issued a freeze watch for both counties, along with a frost advisory.

But the frost advisories were lifted Monday morning for Long Island, while the freeze watch and freeze warning were dropped for Nassau — the weather service saying overnight temperatures into Tuesday are no longer expected to be subfreezing.

However, a freeze warning remains in effect for Suffolk, with temperatures predicted to drop as low as 24 degrees in some areas.

The warning remains in effect through 9 a.m. Tuesday.

"Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation," the weather service said in a statement. "Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold."

The past week has seen dramatic shifts in temperature across Long Island.

According to the official weather service records from Long Island MacArthur Airport, temperatures began last week in the mid-60s, then soared to 81, 82 and 80 degrees for three consecutive days before falling back to 51 degrees Sunday.

Overnight temperatures into Tuesday are expected to be in the mid-30s and low-to-mid-40s all week in Nassau, with daytime highs going from the low 50s Tuesday to the low 60s by Thursday and Friday. In Suffolk, overnight temperatures are expected remain in the upper 30s and low 40s later in the week, while daytime temperatures will hover in the low-to-mid 50s through Wednesday before rising into the low 60s.

Rain is possible Tuesday night into Wednesday.
