After last night's freeze warning, look for Wednesday to be sunny, with temperatures in the mid- to upper 40s on Long Island, the National Weather Service said.

A freeze warning is in effect for the Island until 10 a.m. today, as lows are expected to be in the mid- to upper 20s -- and in the lower 20s in the Pine Barrens, the National Weather Service said.

With a low of 24 forecast Wednesday for Long Island MacArthur Airport, Ronkonkoma, the previous record low of 24, set in 2001, could be tied, the weather service said.

By Thursday, temperatures are expected to climb to the low to mid-50s, said Tim Morrin, weather service meteorologist based in Upton, with mid- to upper 50s forecast for Friday.

After Tuesday morning's wintry mix, a cold air mass settled into the area, with freezing temperatures forecast for Tuesday night and some wind chills in the teens, the weather service said.

Morrin said a cold front moved in about 5 a.m. Tuesday, and in an hour's time, the temperatures plummeted nearly 12 degrees.
