A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for Nassau County for Saturday afternoon and evening due to the possible development of severe thunderstorms and damaging winds.

Showers and thunderstorms could start around 5 or 6 p.m. Saturday, increasing in intensity into the night and early Sunday morning, before tapering off by about 8 a.m., said Joey Picca, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton.

Precipitation is likely across Long Island, with a higher chance of stronger storms and slightly heavier rainfall amounts in Nassau County, he said.

Damaging wind gusts are also a possibility, though as of early Friday afternoon there did not appear to be potential for tornado formation, he said.
