Scorcher.

That's how Samantha Augeri, News 12 Long Island meteorologist, describes Saturday's weather.

In fact, a heat advisory has been issued for noon to 6 p.m. for Nassau County, with heat-index values expected in the lower 100s, according to the National Weather Service. The service issues advisories when the combination of heat and humidity make it feel like it's between 100 to 104 degrees for two consecutive hours.

Highs of 95 to 99 degrees are likely in Nassau County, except along the South Shore, Augeri said. Expect to wake up Saturday to warm and muggy air with temperatures nearing 90 by noontime, she said. The forecast high for Islip, where readings are taken at Long Island MacArthur Airport, is 91.

Dr. Michael Ammazzalorso, chief medical officer at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, suggests:

Placing a cold compress or ice pack on your head or neck if you're working outside.

Wearing lightweight, loose fitting clothes and avoiding dark colors, which absorb heat.

Sipping water throughout the day; avoiding beverages with caffeine, alcohol or lots of sugar.

Staying indoors during the hottest part of the day -- early morning and evening are better times to be outside.

For those seeking relief Saturday, the Town of Southold is opening cooling centers at the Human Resource and Senior Center, 750 Pacific St., Mattituck, and the Southold Town Recreation Center, 970 Peconic Lane, Peconic, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to a news release.

Augeri said a cold front is forecast to arrive Saturday evening. Look for scattered showers and thunderstorms most likely Saturday after 6 p.m., clearing by noon Sunday, said Dan Hofmann, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton.

As for the rest of the week? Sunny days are forecast, with highs near 80 or in the lower 80s.
