Some areas of Suffolk County saw gusts approaching 50 mph Monday while some of Nassau experienced gusts approaching 40 mph, the National Weather Service said.

The strongest gusts in Suffolk were recorded at Great Gull Island, east of Plum Island on the North Fork. Those hit 48 mph.

For mainland Suffolk, gusts of 46 mph were recorded at Brookhaven Calabro Airport in Shirley at 4:51 p.m. Monday, while gusts of 45 mph were recorded in Stony Brook at 1:23 p.m. Other Suffolk locations with winds topping 40 mph included: Eatons Neck and Orient at 44 mph; Southold at 42 mph; and MacArthur Airport, Republic Airport, Smithtown and Baiting Hollow, all at 41 mph; and West Gilgo Beach and areas of the Great South Bay at 40 mph.

Though winds of 46 mph were recorded at Kings Point, most of Nassau saw slightly milder wind conditions.

The weather service recorded winds of 37 mph Monday in Bellmore, Bayville and Oyster Bay, with winds of 36 mph in Plainview and winds of 35 mph in Uniondale and Merrick, the latter recorded at 7:15 p.m.

Gusts of 48 mph were recorded at LaGuardia Airport, while Kennedy Airport had gusts of 46 mph.

Tuesday afternoon, the PSEG Long Island's outage map indicated more than 2,000 customers were without power, down from 6,200 in the morning.

Suffolk police said they received more than 50 calls of downed trees and wires blocking roads into homes, and even some causing sparks.

A wind advisory was lifted at 8 a.m. Tuesday for Long Island, the weather service said. But Tuesday evening, winds will remain gusty, reaching 24 mph in some places while temperatures dip to the mid 20s.

Wednesday will feature ample sunshine and calmer winds with wind chills of between 20 and 30 degrees, a high in the low 40s and and a low in the high 20s. Thursday looks similar, with a low of 33. Friday will be the warmest day of the week with sunshine and a high of 49.

A chance of rain is forecast for both Saturday and Sunday although highs will reach to about 50.
