Hot, muggy weather continues its grip on Long Island on the first day of September -- and the first day back to school for many.

Daily highs in the upper 80s -- with some parts of Nassau and Suffolk counties reaching 90 and higher -- are expected Tuesday, the National Weather Service's Upton office said.

Temperatures are 5 to 10 degrees above normal for this time of year, the service said.

Sunny skies also rule the day, accompanied by light winds from the southeast at 5 to 7 mph.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said the dry weather and above-normal temps continue through the Labor Day weekend.

The flirting with 90 degrees also will continue Wednesday and most of Thursday, Hoffman said.

An incoming cold front Thursday night will bring a chance of scattered showers and storms, he said. The service said chance of precipitation Thursday night is 30 percent.

The front drops humidity levels some for the extended holiday weekend, Hoffman said.

But weather will still be summerlike, "with sunshine, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday and daily highs 80 to 85."
