Hurricane Sandy: Glen Cove orders islands evacuated

On Glen Cove's East and West islands, where a causeway and a bridge provide the only link to the rest of the city, scores of fire, EMS and police auxiliary officials went door to door on Sunday warning homeowners to evacuate by 11 a.m. Monday -- or earlier if conditions deteriorate.

Mayor Ralph Suozzi, who patrolled East Island in his Chevrolet Tahoe, issued the mandatory evacuation order about 5 p.m. Sunday.

Officials said a storm surge of 6 to 11 feet above high tide could make the causeways impassable.

Homeowner Deborah Kurre said she and her family would evacuate to her husband's parents' home in New Hyde Park. The couple have lived there six years and this would be the first time they have had to evacuate.

Seven people fishing on a jetty off the city's Morgan Park were briefly stranded Sunday afternoon, said Office of Emergency Management director Michael Salentino. Police, city EMS and members of a nearby yacht club rescued them, he said.

The city has about 10 miles of waterfront along the Long Island Sound.
